Mental and physical wellbeing
Yoga is a wonderful way to prepare for childbirth. It helps you feel more physically and mentally balanced while deepening your connection with your baby. The most important thing is to listen carefully to your body.
If you already have a yoga practice, you can continue it in a modified form. Take it easier than usual and avoid going too deep into poses, as pregnancy hormones make your body more flexible. Avoid deep twists and practice all poses gently.
Gentle classes like Gentle Flow, Slow Flow, Basic Flow, Yin Yoga, and Restorative Yoga can provide excellent support during pregnancy.
Trust your intuition to choose what feels right for you. Always inform your teacher that you’re pregnant so they can take this into account.
If you’re new to yoga, this may not be the best time to start regular classes. Our partner The House of Balance offers a Prenatal Yoga & Birth Preparation course at De Nieuwe Yogaschool, designed to prepare you fully for childbirth. Learn more at thehouseofbalance.nl.
It’s generally recommended to wait 6 to 12 weeks before resuming exercise after giving birth, ideally starting with a form of movement you practiced before pregnancy. If you’re new to yoga or Pilates, consult a physiotherapist first.
After giving birth, your body needs to rebuild strength, particularly in the abdomen, pelvis, and joints, which may have been affected by pregnancy hormones. Yoga and Pilates are great ways to restore strength through slow and mindful movement.
Gentle practices such as Gentle Flow, Slow Flow, or Basic Flow are recommended. However, avoid Yin Yoga during the first 3 to 6 months postpartum, as it involves deep stretching of connective tissues. Restorative Yoga can be a beautiful way to support the recovery process.
Every body responds differently to yoga or Pilates after childbirth, so it’s important to take it easy and listen to your body to prevent injuries. Always inform your teacher about your postpartum status so they can offer tailored advice. If you have concerns or a condition such as diastasis recti, consult a (pelvic) physiotherapist.
No. It’s essential to understand that our classes, workshops, trainings, and retreats are not a substitute for therapy, medical treatment, or diagnosis. Our offerings support self-development and can guide personal awakening but are not intended to replace medical advice or care. Any changes or discontinuation of therapeutic, psychological, psychiatric, or other medical treatment should be done under the supervision of a medical professional.
We cannot provide a definitive answer to this question. If you are currently undergoing or have recently undergone treatment for mental health issues, an environment focused on expanding awareness may not be suitable for you. Please consult your general practitioner or medical specialist to determine whether this environment is appropriate for you.
People with psychiatric conditions or significant emotional instability may not benefit from environments that involve intense meditation or introspection. In some cases, such settings may initially worsen pre-existing mental health issues, bringing latent trauma or deep-seated tendencies to the surface. This can result in overwhelming thoughts, emotional responses, or behaviors.
While our classes may offer opportunities for self-reflection, participants with psychological conditions may feel overwhelmed and require additional medical or psychiatric support. Please note that we do not have the expertise to provide medical or psychiatric care.
The following questions can help provide more insight into whether participation is suitable for you. This questionnaire is not a substitute for medical or psychiatric advice. If you answer “yes” to any of the questions, our introspective offerings may not be suitable for you at this time. Consultation with your (general) physician is recommended.
- Are you currently undergoing or have you ever undergone treatment for any of the following conditions: anxiety disorders (including generalized anxiety, agoraphobia, or panic disorder), mood disorders (including clinical depression, mania, or bipolar disorder), obsessive-compulsive disorders, personality disorders, schizophrenia, psychosis, or related conditions?
- Are you currently taking prescribed medication for a mental health condition?
- Have you used psychoactive substances (recreational or otherwise) in the past six months?
- Have you experienced substance misuse (including dependency or addiction) or stopped using substances less than 12 months ago?
- Have you noticed a deterioration in your mental health in the past 12 months, whether or not you sought professional help?
If your question isn’t answered here, feel free to email us at info@denieuweyogaschool.nl or visit us in the studio. We’re happy to help.
