DNYS blog – Anicha: on change, letting go, and moving with the flow

Nothing ever stays exactly the same. The seasons change, the waves come and go, you are no longer the same person you were a year ago. In Buddhism, this is called Anicha called: the wisdom that everything is in motion, always. Change isn't something we can stop; it happens, with or without our approval. But when we embrace it, it can actually bring us freedom.
Everything changes and that's a beautiful thing
Everything changes. The Buddha called this principle AnichaThe transience of everything around us. That can be an uncomfortable thought. We cling to people, situations, things, memories. We want to hold on to what feels good and dread the moment we have to let something go. But what if we didn't see this transience as a threat, but as an invitation? A reminder that nothing stays the same, so even when something feels heavy or difficult, that too shall pass.
Change creates space
When we realize that change is the only constant, space is created. Space to breathe, to soften, to embrace life as it presents itself. We learn this in yoga too. A pose that feels challenging now will change if you continue to breathe into it. A moment of tension flows into relaxation. Thoughts and feelings come and go, just like the waves of the sea.
Yoga invites us to move with it, rather than resisting it. When we learn to move with what is, without resistance, we discover that change is not a threat, but an invitation that opens up new possibilities.
And perhaps that's the greatest lesson: that we don't have to hold on to life, we don't have to force it, but that we can fully immerse ourselves in it. Knowing that everything flows. Everything changes. And that in that, precisely in that, a deep peace can be found.
The wisdom of daring to let go
In the Western world, we often try to maintain control. We plan, organize, and adjust, as if by doing so we can avoid change. But true freedom only arises when we dare to let go. Not passively, but consciously. As the Indian author Deepak Chopra puts it: "Holding on sooner or later creates pain. Letting go creates freedom."
That doesn't mean letting go is always easy. Sometimes it means saying goodbye, sometimes it means slowing down, and sometimes it simply means daring to pause and appreciate what's happening now. But what if we remind ourselves that even the toughest moment will eventually change? That a new beginning is always possible?
Change as an invitation on the yoga mat
On the yoga mat, we practice this again and again. In a deep forward bend, where you briefly feel the resistance. In a meditation where restless thoughts slowly still. In a breath that repeatedly brings you back to the present moment. Yoga isn't something you're "good" or "bad" at. It's a path of awareness, of being present in the moment, exactly as it is.
And perhaps that's the greatest lesson: that we don't have to hold on to life, we don't have to force it, but that we can fully immerse ourselves in it. Knowing that everything flows. Everything changes. And that in that, precisely in that, deep peace can be found.
