Meditation course for inner freedom
In this 8-day Dutch-language course, you delve into the core of meditation: not as a technique, but as a direct path to self-insight and inner freedom. You learn how to use meditation to get closer to your true self, layer by layer—beyond thoughts, roles, and beliefs—to ultimately let go of the meditating person as well. All that remains is pure awareness, in which life comes and goes effortlessly.
In this meditation course, we combine ancient wisdom from the non-dual tradition, among others, with insights from modern science. Think of topics such as:
- What happens chemically, biologically, and hormonally
- Brain waves, heart coherence and the functioning of our nervous system
- Self-inquiry and trauma-informed meditation
- Spiritual integrity and the pitfalls of the spiritual path
- The functioning and sustainable integration of Kundalini and survival energy
and yes… even Sijbrand's drawing, in which he attempts to explain the entire creation, is shown.
“This is the training we have been providing since the founding of De Nieuwe YogaschoolI've always wanted to be a designer. Here, everything falls into place."

Our intention with this meditation training
In this 8-day meditation course, the three founders of create De Nieuwe Yogaschool, together with Jentien Keijzer, a space where you can come to understand and experience what is meant by Meditation and Self-Realization. From a scientific approach, we explore the benefits of meditation and how we can use it as a safe and supportive tool.
From the perspective of self-realization, we will point to the essence of who you are within the world of form (consciousness) and to the absolute essence in which even consciousness appears and disappears. We will delve into the (subtle) mechanisms behind unnecessary psychological suffering and will compassionately address what is also called the awakened or spiritual ego. It will become clear why we feel connected, still, and present at one moment, only to seem to lose this feeling the next.
The four teachers have each, in their own unique way, been searching for truth, unconditional love, a life without unnecessary suffering—for essence—for decades. They will not hold back from sharing their direct experience and lived knowledge. This is the training they have always wanted to create together since the school's founding in 2013. Here, everything comes together.
During the training, there is plenty of room to further deepen your own practice, because that is where real growth begins. That is why you receive 6 classes as a gift, to be taken in the studio or online.
Meet the teachers
During the eight days you will be guided by Johan Noorloos and Mariken Hogenhout (two days each), Sijbrand Maal (three days) and psychologist Jentien Keijzer (one day).
Who is the meditation course for?
This meditation course is intended for anyone who feels that there is more than the story of the 'I' — and who is willing to truly explore that. From the perspective of science and direct experience. Not to become something, but to discover what you already are at your deepest core. In this training, meditation and introspection are primarily at the service of self-realization — the direct recognition of your true nature. In this seeing, something unfolds that is nothing less than liberation. The suffering that arises from identification with the temporal and the personal. We combine contemplation and silence with insights from modern science. Theory does not stand alone, but helps to give meaning to what you experience — in body, nervous system, and consciousness. Understanding can make room for surrender.
You don't have to become anything: you already are it.
Ultimately, of course, it's all about your own experience. We do our utmost to provide a safe haven where you, together with a group of like-minded people, can achieve clear vision. This training will transform you into nothing—and yet, what you learn and experience will radiate through you everywhere. You are the light of this world, freedom itself. It has always been our desire to make this a lived reality for you.

Reviews
This training is truly incredibly special. With limited meditation experience, I didn't really know what to expect, but this was definitely not it. The training combines psychological insights with yoga philosophy and a tremendous amount of self-awareness. The meditations were truly special, and I felt incredibly supported by the skilled teachers and a loving group. It was truly special to be a part of this. An experience that will stay with me forever!
Steffie (Meditation for Self-Realization)
Besides the primary focus on group work, there's also room for Single student development. It's a training where everything comes together and it has changed my perspective on life. I'm very enthusiastic, and I recommend this training to anyone who wants to explore consciousness and the layers beyond. The knowledge, meditations, and other exercises have provided a pathway to self-awareness and beyond.
Anonymous (Meditation for Self-Realization)
Johan, Sijbrand, Mariken, and guest instructor Jentien put together a wonderful program in which they shared not only their knowledge of the past years, but also their highs, lows, and pitfalls. I most enjoyed the yoga exercises that sometimes preceded the silence. I find this to be one of the last areas of focus in my personal, and perhaps also in my professional, journey: paying attention to my body in a way that consistently serves me and my Self.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. All classes are taught in Dutch.
Some articles in the workbook are in English, but reading them is not required to participate in the training.
Some experience with meditation is desirable, but you don't need to be a seasoned practitioner. What we primarily ask for is an open, curious attitude and a willingness to gently sit with whatever arises.
We'll meditate together regularly—up to 40-45 minutes, and perhaps even longer. We'll build this up carefully and in a personalized way, focusing on safety, body awareness, and self-regulation. Our trauma-sensitive perspective means you'll always have the space to express your needs. Nothing needs to be forced or pushed.
The strength of the group and its supportive presence often make sitting surprisingly accessible, even if you might find it difficult on your own. You are welcome exactly as you are—with everything you bring.
De Meditatie tot Zelfrealisatie training takes six weeks on average.
Do you choose the Summer Intensive, then you will complete the entire process in about three weeks.
De Meditation for Self-RealizationTraining is profound, intensive, and challenging in its simplicity. We work with prolonged silence, self-examination, and inner processes that can directly touch the core of the "self." While this can be extremely valuable, it also requires a certain degree of stability and self-regulation.
Therefore, this training is currently not suitable for people who:
-
have recently experienced a serious mental health crisis (such as psychosis or suicidal depression),
-
currently being treated for serious psychiatric problems,
-
have recently experienced addiction problems and are still in the early stages of recovery,
-
have difficulty with extended periods of silence or introspection due to dissociation or trauma without adequate guidance,
-
to be in an unstable phase of life in which there is a lack of peace, resilience or structure.
Are you unsure whether this training is suitable for you at this time?
Feel free to contact us via teachertraining@denieuweyogaschool.nlWe're happy to share our thoughts with you—openly and without judgment. Sometimes it's helpful to first try another form of guidance and then participate in this training later.
After registering, you will receive an invitation to complete an intake form. Based on this form, we can contact you personally, if necessary, to discuss whether participation is appropriate at this time.
This training can be deeply moving. Sometimes, feelings, insights, or reactions arise afterward that require time and space. This is perfectly natural.
During the training and in the weeks afterward, you can contact Sijbrand directly if necessary. He's happy to share his experience and commitment to this process.
Please note: Sijbrand is not a personal therapist. If more intensive guidance is needed, we will support you in finding appropriate professional help.
So you are not alone, but we want to be clear about our role and scope.
This training is certified by The New Yoga Network — the network of and for yoga teachers, trainers and coaches who have been trained through De Nieuwe YogaschoolBoth the training institute and the network share the core values security, to fully experience the connection, integrity en equivalence from.

There is no exam associated with the Meditatie tot Zelfrealisatie training.
The focus is on direct experience, self-exploration, and integration—not on performance or judgment. You're here to discover, not to prove.
Outside of the training days, you'll be invited to meditate independently. You'll also receive a comprehensive workbook with input from the instructors, inspiring articles, and reflective assignments. Here too, you're invited to read, study, and reflect on what resonates with you.
The workbook has been carefully crafted to deepen and gain insight into your process — not as an obligation, but as a support for your own journey of discovery.
This training is structured as a whole, with the structure and group process being essential. If you miss one day, you can usually still participate. If you miss more than two days, we advise against participation—the process will lose its depth and coherence.
Unfortunately, overtaking another group is not possible, as we do not want to disrupt the unique group process.
During training days, we recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move and sit still easily. Please note that we will be walking barefoot or in socks in the studios. Therefore, you may want to bring an extra pair of warm socks, especially in cold weather.
Meditation cushions, chairs, blankets, and regular chairs (if needed) are available at the school. Feel free to bring your own meditation equipment if that's more comfortable for you.
On the last Sunday of the training we start already at 04.00 o'clock in the morningBecause this can be a challenge in terms of travel time and rest, we offer the option of staying overnight from Saturday to Sunday.
The cost of overnight stay and breakfast on Sunday morning are included in the training fee. Further practical details will follow later.
